With his prominent cheek bones, sunken cheeks and aquiline nose, Peter Cushing is undoubtedly one of the most striking and iconic faces in the history of horror films. Coupling his dapper physical appearance with his quiet, well-spoken manner, Cushing has often been described as "the gentleman of horror." As a lifelong Peter Cushing fan, I would certainly agree with that appellation, as I believe he brought a certain kind of class and inherent quality to each role he played, be it a horror part or otherwise.

My earliest memories of watching a Peter Cushing movie go back to the late sixties, when I first saw him in the Hammer horror movies I grew to love so much. As a small boy staying up late to watch Appointment With Fear every Monday evening at 10.30 pm, I was instantly struck by this fantastic British actor with the compelling face, a man who could play either Baron Frankenstein or Dracula's arch nemesis, Dr Van Helsing, with equal charm and charisma. In those far off days, I had to be content with an old black-and-white TV set, so watching Mr Cushing in that context was thrilling enough in itself. But then, when we finally got our colour telly in 1975, and I was then able to view all those wonderful Hammer horror movies in glorious technicolor - well, that was an even bigger joy than my initial exposure to them on my old black-and-white set way back in the sixties!

It wasn't just the Hammer movies that I loved Mr Cushing in, for he did make some excellent appearances in the Amicus films too. Amicus were the main rivals to Hammer when it came to producing top-quality horror movies, and my favourite Cushing role in these portmanteau films was that of the tragic ex-garbage man Arthur Grimsdyke in Tales From The Crypt (1972), who is hounded into committing suicide by the cold-hearted actions of a snooty neighbour, who takes exception to the way Grimsdyke befriends local children and harbours dogs in his house, picking dirt out of what is, after all, just a simple case of a lonely, harmless old man playing the kindly uncle to the local kids. This is, without doubt, one of Cushing finest roles, and I really felt sorry for Mr Grimsdyke when his tormentor finally drives the poor old man to hang himself. But of course, this being a Cushing horror movie, and one where the character has been tampering with a Ouija board, it didn't all end there, for one year later, the rotting corpse of Grimsdyke rises from the grave to exact a grisly revenge on his ruthless neighbour, ripping out his heart and leaving it for his shocked father to find the next morning, wrapped up in a blood-soaked cloth bearing a Valentine's poem written in blood. Classic Amicus stuff!

Next to all his Hammer movies, the Cushing Amicus films take special pride of place on my DVD shelf. Whenever I look at my DVD collection, I often think to myself that when I used to watch Peter in all those fantastically creepy films years ago, I never once thought that one day I would actually own them all in this format, always there to watch whenever I want to.

It wasn't often that Peter Cushing played a baddie, but when he did, he could really impress, just as unforgettably as he could when he played the kindly gentleman roles. The movie that sees Mr Cushing at his most ruthless and nasty is, for me, the 1969 classic Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. In fact, of all the Frankenstein films he starred in, this is the one that really portrays the Baron at his darkest, stooping to such shocking acts as rape and murder. He blackmails a young couple to assist him with his ever-fanatical experiments, and when the girl, Anna (played by the lovely Veronica Carlson), inadvertently sets the monster free, he cold-bloodedly knives her to death. Alongside the tragic image of poor Mr Arthur Grimsdyke hanging by his neck in Tales From The Crypt, the scene where poor Anna is lying dead with Frankenstein's scalpel protruding from her stomach in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed certainly ranks high in my list of Cushing movies which have the most shock value.

Of course, everybody knows that Peter Cushing did play many other roles outside the horror genre, and has appeared in countless stage productions portraying such literary characters as Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Oh yes, and who could forget his occasional guest appearances on The Morecambe and Wise Show, where he persistently harassed the two comedians for his "money." However, it is for his awesome performances as Baron Frankenstein and Abraham Van Helsing, along with all his other horror roles, that I shall mostly remember him. He made those parts his own - just as his great friend Christopher Lee did with Dracula and Boris Karloff did with the Frankenstein Monster - and nobody, but nobody, could fill his shoes in that respect.

The horror movie industry of today is, sadly, a much poorer place without Peter Cushing, the "gentleman of horror."

As a published author of Kindle paranormal and horror books, and as a huge fan of horror movies, I would like to list my all time top ten horror movies. As there are some real classics here, I am sure that some of these movies will also feature highly in the top ten lists of many other horror fans.

1. Frankenstein (1931) - The granddaddy of them all: Frankenstein's Monster, played by the great Boris Karloff. This was the film that got me hooked on horror movies when I first saw it as a kid. Nobody has been able to play Frankenstein's creation quite like Karloff did, as he brought a remarkable sense of pathos to the role. I love everything about this movie, from Colin Clive's ecstatically crazed tones of "It's alive! Alive!" to the fiery finale in the old windmill. The ultimate Universal horror movie, and a true classic.

2. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - It's not often that a sequel to a popular movie lives up to the first. The Bride of Frankenstein was one of those pleasing exceptions. In fact, many cinema buffs regard this second film in the Karloff Frankenstein trilogy as being even better than the previous one. Again, Universal work their special movie monster magic here, as Dr Frankenstein is forced to create a mate for his creature - with disastrous results. Elsa Lanchester is brilliant as the Bride, as is Ernest Thesiger who plays the devious Dr Pretorius. This is also the movie where the monster learns to speak, albeit with a very limited vocabulary. Again, like the first film, a true horror classic.

3. Dracula (1958) - The movie that led me to becoming a BIG fan of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Seeing the Hammer Dracula for the very first time, with those terrifying blood-red eyes, razor-sharp fangs and hissing visage made the old black-and-white Dracula movies same so tame by comparison. The definitive Hammer horror movie, and one that should be in every horror fan's DVD collection. Christopher Lee is the best Dracula ever, a fact attested to when the studio had him coming back again and again in a new sequel. Nobody can play Dracula as brilliantly as Christopher Lee can, and I don't think anybody ever will.

4. The Wolf Man (1941) - Universal added a third movie monster to their chamber of celluloid horrors in the form of the Wolf Man, and although, unlike Frankenstein's monster and Dracula, this creature was not taken directly from a novel (it was from a Curt Siodmak script), it still proved to be every bit as terrifying and awesome as the other two. Lon Chaney Jr. played the cursed lycanthrope Lawrence Talbot magnificently, and his character's exploits were wonderfully enhanced by the atmosphere of fog-shrouded forests, creepy gypsy clans and brilliant musical score. And, of course, Jack Pierce did a brilliant job with the Wolf Man makeup.

5. Psycho (1960) - Famous for its notorious shower scene, Psycho (based on Robert Bloch's novel) is the King of the Slasher Films. Horror moves away from the fantasy world of monsters like The Wolf Man and Frankenstein and into a more close-to-real-life setting, namely a secluded motel run by a seemingly shy, inoffensive young man by the name of Norman Bates. But that initial impression is soon shattered when he dons his mother's clothes and goes on a demented killing spree. Psycho is truly one of Hitchcock's greatest movies.

6. Tales From The Crypt (1972) - You can't beat a good horror portmanteau movie, and of all the films of that type I have seen over the years, I found Tales From The Crypt to be the most enjoyable. Every story is brilliant, especially the one involving Joan Collins and the crazed Santa Claus, and that includes the framing story. Ralph Richardson is also fantastic as the Crypt Keeper. Thank you so much, Amicus, for bringing us masterpiece of portmanteau horror.

7. Halloween (1978) - This John Carpenter movie really proved that you can still scare viewers half to death with a good slasher story without resorting to excessive blood and gore. Masked Michael Myers - also known as "The Shape" - relentlessly stalks Jamie Lee Curtis through darkened streets and houses amid a creepy Halloween atmosphere. Donald Pleasance presents a memorable performance here too as Dr Loomis, who pursues his former patient Myers determinedly and fearlessly throughout the movie. A true horror classic.

8. Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1968) - For me, this movie just embodied everything that was wonderful about Hammer: vibrantly lush settings, beautiful heroines (in this case, the lovely Veronica Carlson), great storyline, and, of course, the wonderful Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, who is revived from a watery grave by the spilling of the blood of a priest, whom he later makes his servant. I especially enjoyed the part where Paul, Maria's boyfriend, stakes Dracula in his coffin, but being an atheist can't recite the holy ritual necessary to ensure complete destruction of the evil vampire. I never get tired of watching this movie, it's that good.

9. Friday The 13th (1980) - An as yet hockey-mask-devoid Jason Voorhees makes his terrifying debut in this gory shocker from 1980. Although I did go on to enjoy all the sequels, the very first Friday The 13th movie will always be my special favourite, mainly because of the aura of mystery that surrounded the Voorhees character.

10. The Wicker Man (1973) - I cannot utter enough superlatives to describe this fantastic cult movie. Truly, one of the most unusual and original films that I have ever seen. Edward Woodward is superb in the role of Police Sergeant Neil Howie, who comes to the remote Hebridean island of Summerisle in search of a missing girl who the locals claim never existed. Being a devout Christian, Howie is disgusted to find that the islanders practise a weird form of Celtic paganism, including open copulation. Christopher Lee is also brilliant as Lord Summerisle, whose devious intentions lead Howie into a trap, culminating in one of the most horrific, heart-wrenching climaxes in horror movie history. The Wicker Man ranks not only in my all time horror movie top ten, but also in my all time top ten films ever.
"Mark's Priory". the family seat of the Lebanons, is a house of terror to Ilsa Crane, secretary and niece of Lady Lebanon. The strange behavior of two sinister butlers, Gilder and Brooks, adds greatly to her fear and her sole consolation lies in the sympathy extended her by young Lord William "Willie" Lebanon. A young architect, Richard Ferraby, arrives from London to inspect the ancient home in regards to renovations, and he and Isla are immediately attracted to each other. Lady Lebanon tells her son that he must marry Isla to carry on the family name but Lord Willie tells her he has no intentions of marrying. Later, the family physician, Dr. Amersham, arrives and it is evident he has some unrevealed hold over Lady Lebanon. The chauffeur, Studd, hints that he knew Aversham in India and that Aversham was discharged from the Indian Army under unsavory circumstances. Isla and Richard find the chauffeur murdered and the suspicion falls on the gamekeeper, Tilling, whose wife had been more than a little friendly with Studd. But Chief Inspector Tanner and Deputy Sergeant Totty arrive from Scotland Yard and uncover evidence that points to Dr. Aversham as the killer, and Lord Willie substantiates the clue by telling them that Aversham had strangled a young Eurasian girl in India by using a red scarf and Studd, also, had been found strangled with a red scarf. The policeman are just about to fold up their tidy little case when a telegram arrives from "Mark's Priory" informing them that Aversham has just been found murdered---strangled with a red scarf. Well, back to the old drawing board.

Free Classic Movies at http://classicmoviesbuff.blogspot.com/
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5319975492192363920.post-23846338181349728832015-03-12T17:30:00.000-04:002015-03-12T17:39:02.728-04:00The Inner Circle - Free Movies - Free Classic Movies - Free Mystery MoviesThe Inner Circle (1946) - Free Movies - Free Classic Movies - Free Mystery Movies

Count Dracula has always been one of my all time favourite movie monsters. Many actors have played Bram Stoker's notorious blood sucker over the years, each bringing their own special personality to the part. However, of all these actors, there are two men in particular who have, for me, really stood tall above all the rest: Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee.
Much debate amongst horror fans has gone on over the years as to which of these two fine actors is the best Dracula, and I myself have been involved in such debates many times. When asked who is my own personal favourite Dracula, I have never had any hesitation whatsoever in stating my preference. But more on that later.
So let us look at what particular attributes and qualities each of these two actors brought to the role of Count Dracula, starting with the legendary Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi.
Bela Lugosi first played Dracula in Universal's classic 1931 movie of the same name. A lot of people actually thought that Lugosi played the Count in a series of films, as Christopher Lee did, but this is actually a misconception, as apart from some stage appearances, the only other time that Lugosi reprised his Dracula role was in the 1948 horror spoof Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein. I first saw Lugosi as Dracula back in the late sixties when, as a kid, I used to stay up late to watch the Universal monster movies I grew to love so much. Although I admired his creepy voice, hypnotically and weirdly staring eyes, and the sheer menace that lurked beneath that aristocratic appearance, I never actually found myself cowering behind the couch in sheer terror. I mean, don't get me wrong, as I did think that Lugosi was a great Dracula, and it is always his image and mannerisms which are replicated whenever anybody, whether in spoofs or in serious scenarios, does a Dracula impersonation. It's just that, as was the case with my other favourite movie monsters, Frankenstein's Monster and The Wolf Man, though I loved watching Lugosi as Dracula, I was never really frightened to any great extent. In a way, I suppose that's a good thing - a healthy thing - as I have always believed that horror films should always be akin to a good ghost train ride - exciting and fun throughout, but at the end leaving no lasting mental scars as you emerge, safely, back into the real world.
Bela Lugosi, unlike Christopher Lee in the later Hammer films, was not depicted baring razor-sharp fangs. Neither did his eyes fill with blood as he bit his victims. But remember, this was 1931, when horror movies were still in their infancy and filmed in black and white, and though still quite creepy with their mist-shrouded woods and castles, the Universal movies were generally pretty tame compared to today's gore-soaked shockers. However, there is no doubt that in his day, Lugosi's Dracula was pretty darned creepy, and his unique portrayal of the vampire count has undoubtedly become an iconic image in horror movie history.
Christopher Lee first played Count Dracula in Hammer's 1958 production, Dracula (released as The Horror of Dracula in the States). And - boy - did he make an impact on me! Just like the many thousands of other cinema goers back then who saw him for the first time, I was both stunned and terrified to see this awesome new British Dracula - in glorious, vibrant Technicolor - burst onto the screen. With his snarling, demonic visage, blood-red eyes and razor-sharp fangs, Lee's Dracula was truly the stuff of nightmares to an eight-year-old kid who had never seen his like before! And I loved that cold, sepulchral voice on the rare occasions that he spoke. In fact, Lee's Dracula was the only one that really frightened me to any great extent. Many's the time I would watch a Hammer Dracula movie with intermittent coverings of my eyes with my fingers, each time Lee appeared on screen with all that blood in his eyes as he feasted on another helpless female victim. This would often prompt my mum to shake her head wearily and say, "I don't know, you've been looking forward to his Dracula film all night, and yet when it comes on, you spend most of it with your hands over your eyes!" Yes, she did have a point, but then again, if Lee's bloodthirsty Count hadn't have made such a powerful impression on me, then the sheer enjoyment factor of these wonderful Hammer films would have been greatly diluted. Nowadays, of course, as a fully grown man, I no longer have a problem watching a Lee Dracula film right through, and certainly don't shield my eyes anymore when the blood starts flowing.
Christopher Lee went on to play Dracula in six more Hammer sequels, in the last two bringing the character into modern times, and I thoroughly enjoyed every single one. I am pleased to say that I now own them all on dvd, and never get tired of watching them.
Of course, there are many horror fans who have their own personal favourite Dracula actor apart from Lee and Lugosi. For instance, Gary Oldman, who played the Count in the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola movie of the same name, has a large fan following. Max Schreck, the bald-headed actor who starred in the 1922 movie Nosferatu, is another popular Dracula. However, for me, there is nobody that can play Dracula quite like Christopher Lee. He truly was the finest - and scariest - Dracula ever.
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Timothy_Stelly_Sr]Timothy Stelly Sr

"Bogie and Bacall" may have been America's most popular movie star couple, with its genesis in the 21940s--the era of film noir. Along which Peter Lorre and Joan Crawford, this quartet set the tenor for that genre of film. Though there were others who were as popular during that time--particularly James Cagney, Bette Davis, et al. It was the aforementioned foursome who best personify that era. Bogart was the tough-as-nails deective or every man, torn between being a mobster and a man abiding by a moral decision. Bacall was the rare combination of vamp and girl next door. Her dimples, almond-shaped eyes and flowing locks made her as big a female actor as her contemporaries, of which Crawford was one. Between 1932-36 Crawford was one of the four biggest box office draws in movies and Lorre was typecast as the consummate villain.

Humphrey DeForest Bogart was born on Christmas Day, 1899, in New York City. His parents were Belmont Maud Humphrey, a surgeon and a renowned commercial artist.

After an uncredited bit part in "Life" (1920), Bogart appeared in 21 Broadway productions between 1922 and 1935. Bogart won his first starring role ten years later in, "Up the River." Bogart's film resume is second to none, having starred in the classics, "Angels With Dirty Faces" (1938), "The Maltese Falcon" (1941, a part turned down by George Raft), "Key Largo" (1948), "Casablanca (1942)," "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948), "The Roaring Twenties" (1939, with James Cagney), "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947), and "The Caine Mutiny(1954)." However, he won the Oscar for Best Actor just once, for his performance as a tough-talking, but soft-hearted boat captain in "The African Queen" (1951) opposite Katherine Hepburn.

Bogart often played characters caught between the allure of the gangster life, but conflicted by moral concerns. This was also a concern of his in real life. His Wikipedia biography states, "Bogart was proud of his success as an actor, but the fact that it came from playing a gangster weighed on him. He once said, 'I can't get in a mild discussion without turning it into an argument. There must be something in my tone of voice, or this arrogant face. Something that antagonizes everybody. Nobody likes me on sight. I suppose that's why I'm cast as the heavy'."

Bogart's voice was often comic fodder for impressionists, Louise Brooks, author of "Humphrey and Bogart "wrote, "His handsome face was made extraordinary by a most beautiful mouth. It was very full, rosy...he both loved and hated his beautiful mouth. America, in the Twenties, was exclusively Western in its ideas of beauty and vulgar people made fun of Humphrey's 'nigger lips'." Nonetheless, Entertainment Weekly magazine named him the number one greatest movie legend of all time. In 1997 he was ranked 9th in the British magazine "Empire" among the "Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time."

Of the American Film Institute's "100 Greatest movie Quotes", six are attributed to Bogart. They include: "Here's looking at you, kid" (No. 5), "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" (No. 20), "We'll always have Paris" (43rd), "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine" (67), "Round up the usual suspects." (No. 32, all from "Casablanca"); and "The stuff that dreams are made of" (No. 14, from "The Maltese Falcon")

Bogart was known as a heavy drinker and pushed himself through the making of "We're No Angels." He had cancer of the esophagus, having it removed in 1956, but by then the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes and ribs. He died in 1957. In his eulogy of Bogie (a nickname bestowed upon him by friend Spencer Tracy), John Huston said succinctly, "He is quite irreplaceable. There will never be another like him."

Peter Lorre was born Ladislav Lowenstein on June 26, 1904 and was known as the consummate villain, over a career that spanned - years. He had been an onstage actor in several foreign productions before Fritz Lang cast him in his classic thriller, "M." (1931). The film is best known for its ending, where Lorre's character pleads for his life. Following "M" he appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's, "The Man Who Knew Too Much." (1934). In 1940 Lorre found his niche, playing a killer in "Stranger On The Third Floor," which many consider Hollywood's first film noir vehicle.

Lorre went on to star with Bogart in "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), "Casablanca" (1942) and the anti-Communist drama, "All Through The Night." (1942). But he was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Japanese detective Mr. Moto, a series which ran from series (1937-1939).

Later in his career Lorre suffered through ill health and made more television appearances than film. He died from a stroke on March 23, 1964, just months after his final film, "The Patsy". The film starred Jerry Lewis and was a movie Lorre was reluctant to do.

Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske in New York City on September 16, 1924. She is the daughter of William and Natalie Perske and is also the cousin of former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

In 1942 she adapted the stage name Betty Bacall (the surname a reworking of her mother's maiden name, 'Bacal'). She was a model who was discovered by director Howard Hawkes, who later cast her in "To Have and Have Not." He suggested she change her name from Betty to Lauren.

During the 1940s Bacall became one of the biggest and arguably sexiest stars of the silver screen, but may be best known for being Bogart's wife. She and Bogie worked together on 1944's "To Have and Have Not," where she seductively cooed one of the greatest lines in movie history: "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow" (No. 34 on AFI's "100 Greatest Film Quotes").

While Betty Davis' eyes" might have inspired a song, Bacall's almond-shaped orbs enchanted many a moviegoer, and even Bogart who met her on the set of "To have and Have Not." He divorced his wife Mayo Methot, and despite being 25 years Bacall's senior, wed her a year later. It was her first marriage but his fourth.

They also worked together in the classics, "Key Largo (1948), "The Big Sleep" (1946), and "Dark Passage" (1947). The two were married for 12 years, until Bogart's death in 1957. It has been written that his last words to her, "Goodbye, kid." He was a legendary boozer and once said, "The trouble with the world is that it's always one drink behind." It is rumored that his last words were, "I should never have switched from scotch to martinis."

Bacall was briefly engaged to Frank Sinatra, then married actor Jason Robards for 8 years, until they divorced due to his alcoholism.

She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in
"The Mirror Has Two Faces," losing to Barbara Hershey ("Portrait of a Lady"). However, she did win a Golden for her performance.

Joan Crawford was once to have said, "I have always known what I wanted, and that was beauty, in every form." A post-mortem bestseller by her stepdaughter Christina which was later turned into a major motion picture, painted a portrait of Ms. Crawford that was quite the opposite. However, no one could argue with her talent, beauty and screen presence.

She was born Lucille Fay Leseur, in San Antonio, Texas, on March 23, 1906. Crawford grew up a poor girl, her father having deserted the family shortly before her birth. But like her character Ethel Whitehead in the movie "The Damned Don't Cry", she was ambitious almost to the point of obsession. The family moved to KC when Joan was but 10, and upon her graduation she went to Chicago.

She began her career as a member of a Chicago dance troupe and was discovered by a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer talent scout. She was invited to Hollywood for a screen test and afterward was signed to a six-month deal. She became so popular with the studio's head, Louis B. Mayer, who believed her last name sounded too much like "sewer." Being that he had grown fond of his new hire, Mayer launched a national contest to find her a new name. After becoming Joan Crawford she soon after became one of the movie industry's biggest stars. She was teamed with Clark Gable in eight films including their only musical, "Dancing Lady" (1933), a film noted for being Fred Astaire's film debut and also featured the Three Stooges. Despite the success from this film, Crawford worried that "talkies" would ruin her career.

Feeling underappreciated, and believing that she was being passed over for better roles in favor of Bette Davis and other actresses in the MGM stable, Crawford left MGM in 1942. MGM believed her popularity was faltering and let her go without acrimony.

Her heyday was during the 40's when she produced some of her best work, "A Woman's Face" (1941), "Mildred Pierce" (1945, for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress), and "Possessed" (1947). Years later, when she was considered "washed up" she stunned audiences with her turn in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" (1962), where she shared screen time with her arch-rival Davis.

She landed at rival Warner Brother Studios where she nabbed the title role in "Mildred Pierce", a movie about a working woman who rises to the top of her field, but whose spoiled daughter steals her husband and eventually is pinned for his murder. A year later she made "Humoresque," where she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, but lost it to Loretta Young for "The Farmer's Daughter." The same result would befall her in 1952, when she lost to Shirley Booth for her performance in "Come Back, Little Sheba".

She died in Manhattan in 1977, of a heart attack. Sadly, she may be forever remembered as a sadistic stepmother with an extreme disdain for wire hangers.
